Rügen Island is a unique nature paradise! The island has a total area of 976 square km, 15,000 ha forest and 574 km of coast line thus is Germany's largest island. The island is surrounded by the Baltic Sea and locatedin the very north-eastern part, in the federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The interesting shape is characterised by numerous bays, peninsulas and headlands which are a result of thousands of years of erosion and sedimentation by the ocean.

On a global scale the island is located on 54th latitude of the Northern Hemnisphere and therefore daylight can last for up to 17 hours in summer. At this time, the sun touches the horizon with an angle which is nearly planar. This causes long lasting twilight and beautiful sunrises as well as sunsets. Whoever doesn't mind cold temperatures may be able to observe bizarre ice formations which emerge by freezing of the coastal environment in winter.
