Magnificent Rügen Island
Rügen Island is a unique nature paradise! The island has a total area of 976 square km, 15,000 ha forest and 574 km of coast line thus is Germany's largest island. The island is surrounded by the Baltic Sea and locatedin the very north-eastern part, in the federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The interesting shape is characterised by numerous bays, peninsulas and headlands which are a result of thousands of years of erosion and sedimentation by the ocean.

The island offers a yearly average of approx. 1,800 sunshine hours and is therefore Germany's sunniest island. Being on the island it is likely to have 10 sunshine hours on 65 days of the year. The coastal and island climate is characterised by active winds thus interesting local weather suitable for wind surfing. One of the many advantages is its clean air; this is the reason why there are many officially recognised recreation and spa areas. On a global scale the island is located on 54th latitude of the Northern Hemnisphere and therefore daylight can last for up to 17 hours in summer. At this time, the sun touches the horizon with an angle which is nearly planar. This causes long lasting twilight and beautiful sunrises as well as sunsets. Whoever doesn't mind cold temperatures may be able to observe bizarre ice formations which emerge by freezing of the coastal environment in winter.
